Sky Watch - Last Super Moon of 2020

The full Moon tonight was known to the Native Americans as the Full Flower Moon. This is because it's the time of year when Spring flowers are bursting in volume and with vibrancy.

Other known names for this particular Moon are Mother's Moon, Milk Moon and Corn Planting Moon due to the warmer temperatures that increase fertility in animals, encouraging the bearing of offspring, and a near end to late frosts that could hinder crop planting.

Not only is it a full Moon, but it's also a supermoon -- and the last one for 2020. The Moon will be at its closest approach to the Earth, which gives it the larger-than-normal appearance as it magnificently ascends in the night sky.

Fun Fact: In astronomy, the terms "perigee syzygy" or "perigee full Moon" are typically used in place of the expression supermoon.
